How to Properly Lubricate Dental Turbine Handpieces: Secrets to Extending Life and Ensuring Efficient Performance

Dental turbine handpieces are an important piece of dental office equipment, and proper maintenance plays a key role in extending their service life and ensuring trouble-free operation. In this article, we'll go over the steps to properly lubricate your turbine tips, which will help you maintain a high level of performance from your equipment. Before starting operation, be sure to read the operating, maintenance and lubrication instructions from the manufacturer.

1. Selection of lubricant:

Before you begin lubrication, make sure you are using the lubricant recommended by the manufacturer. It is generally recommended to use special high purity oils for turbine tips.

2. Cleaning before lubrication:

Thoroughly clean the turbine handpiece to remove any remaining dirt, tartar or other contaminants. Use sterile wipes and additional cleaning products. Do not wash the tips in running water or immerse them in a bath with detergents.

3. Turbine lubrication:

Wrap the tip in a tissue or place it in a grease bag to prevent oil from splashing and getting on your clothing. Install the tip of the can into the air supply hole in the rotor group; if the tip has a quick-release connection, use a special nozzle. Apply lubricant for 2...3 seconds. If the lubricant comes out of the tip clean, it means the tip has been washed and lubricated. If the lubricant comes out of the tip with contaminants, then it is necessary to repeat the spray application. After lubricating, wipe off excess oil with a napkin.

  4. Testing and removal of excess:

Install the turbine tip onto the hose. Run the turbine at idle speed for a few seconds to ensure even distribution of the lubricant. After this, remove all excess grease from the surface of the tip.

5. Regularity of the procedure:

Repeat the lubrication process daily, according to the manufacturer's recommendations. This will ensure constant lubrication quality and prevent bearing wear. If the handpiece works for a long time in one day, then lubrication must be repeated additionally during the day.

- if you cut continuously with one tip for 20...30 minutes, then it must be stopped and lubricated. For comparison, this is the average time after 2...3 patients.

6. Storing lubricated tips:

After lubrication, proper storage is also important. Ensure that turbine tips are stored in a clean and dry area, protected from dust and moisture.

By following these simple but important steps, you will keep your dental turbine handpieces operating efficiently, extend their life, and ensure the smooth running of your dental practice. Remember to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for each specific turbine tip type.
